The Story :

The title may imply sisters, but the "girls" of this affecting new drama are mother and daughter: 32-year-old Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel), 16. "There are so many complexities to [their relationship]," says Alexis. "It's the closest bond you can have." That the two are best friends who share lip gloss and an affinity for Macy Gray is one surprise; the other is that they do so in Stars Hollow, Conn. -- the kind of charming small town that usually crops up on TV just once a year... in It's a Wonderful Life. "We're hitting these two [characters] at a crossroads," says executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino. Rory is poised to enter the pressure cooker of Chilton Prep, where academic competition is cutthroat and the guys are aggresive. "Rory is a loner, and she's fine with it," says Sherman-Palladino. "She's not looking at the popular kids, going, 'Gee, I wish I had [her] hair.'" She'll need to turn to someone, though, when a rivalry with the head girl heats up -- and that's where Lorelai may stumble. "You've got a mom who doesn't really know how to be a mom," says Sherman-Palladino. "She knows how to be a pal." Watching both Gilmores grow could be one of this fall's greatest pleasures.
