Super Cool Party People
episode #6.20 | written by Elise

WB Summary: Luke (Scott Patterson) decides to give April (Vanessa Marano) a birthday party at the diner. Lorelai (Lauren Graham) volunteers to help, and is hurt when Luke explains that he still thinks it's too soon for April and Lorelai to meet. However, Luke changes his mind when the party is a disaster, giving Lorelai a chance to bond with April while turning the party into a huge success. Meanwhile, Rory (Alexis Bledel) rushes to be with Logan (Matt Czuchry) at the hospital after he is seriously injured during a stunt with the Life and Death Brigade. The episode was written by David Rosenthal and directed by Ken Whittingham.

Elise's Comment:

I really enjoyed the episode. It wasn't written or directed by Amy, but by David Rosenthal. It somewhat reassures me that the other writers can give us enjoyable episodes. However, Amy is still Executive Producer, so who knows if David, who is replacing her next season, will be able to keep the charm of the series. Anyways, this post is not about this, but about the great episode.

Rory calling Mitchum an "ass"
I cannot put into words the satisfaction I got out of seeing Rory say all those things to Mitchum. I don't think that man has been put in his place a lot in his life. I'm glad to see that Rory wasn't afraid to do it. Did you see that look they exchanged at the hospital? Classic. This also proves how much she cares for Logan. I have to admit, Logan was pretty stupid to jump off a cliff drunk, but nothing compared to Collin and Finn. Those two are idiots.

Luke's explanation
Finally! We know why Luke has been keeping Lorelai out of April's life. I never understood it, and it frustrated me that Lorelai didn't ask for an explanation. I'm glad she did this time. (I'm also glad she did some gift exchange at the last minute). It's understandable why Luke felt that way. The party proved him right.

April's Party
Lorelai truly knows how to throw a party. Luke was lucky to have her to rescue him from his party fiasco. Come on! Was it really necessary to get so graphic about the consequences of going in the kitchen and getting cut by knives? You can truly see that he has never really entertained children before. However, I couldn't help but notice that he was way more uptight than the time he invited that soccer team over to the diner. Maybe because he's more protective of April? I felt like Sookie tonight, I wish had been at that party, once Lorelai got there. She would be the perfect camp counselor for sure. This episode gave us a glimpse into what Rory's childhood must have been like. I remember Rory saying her birthday parties were pretty wild when she was younger ("Rory's Birthday Parties").

Anna's gut feeling
As weird as it was to see Lorelai as the "other" woman, the stranger, I understand Anna's point of view. Lorelai herself didn't want Max to get too involved in Rory's life, because she didn't want her to get attached to him and then get hurt if he left. Rory was 16 at the time. Anna has a right to protect her daughter from being hurt. And she has a good reason to do it; she doesn't even know if Luke will stick around himself. However, it was very weird to see Lorelai being doubted like that. I felt very bad for her; she looked like she was going to cry.

Of course there were some funny and memorable tid-bits: Paris calling the hospital, the nurse's and doctor's reactions, Sookie going on and on about Bonne Bell lip smackers, Michel re-doing the website, the Molly Ringwald speech, and the toiletry set. A good episode overall.

Talk about this episode...
