Always A Godmother,
Never A God

episode #6.04 | written by Elise

WB summary: Missing Rory (Alexis Bledel), Lorelai (Lauren Graham) tries to call her and is upset to find that Rory's cell phone is no longer in service. Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) asks Lorelai and Rory to be the godparents to her two children in the hope that they will reconcile when they see each other at the ceremony. However, mother and daughter end up fighting when Lorelai realizes that Rory gave her new cell number to Sookie but not to her. Logan (Matt Czuchry) learns that his father expects him to graduate this year and enter the family business. Wanting to break free from family pressures, Logan whisks Rory off to a weekend in New York. Robert Berlinger directed the episode written by Rebecca Rand Kirshner.

Elise's comment:

A very funny episode. There wasn't one large story, but a lot of smaller ones: Baptism, Rory's mixer, Lane's band. They didn't do such a good job at tying everything together. But thank god for those funny moments, because there were a few:

1- Rory comes home to find Logan with Collin, Finn and Collin's milk maid (what's up with that?). Rory's wearing her mixer dress and Logan says something like: “You've got that hot librarian look going on. Just grab a book and let's go”.

2- Jackson's brother Bo (can you say "eww"?) doesn't seem to be leaving Lorelai alone. I just loved the way both Jackson and Sookie kept saying: “I'm so sorry....We're soooo sorry.”

3- Rory and Lorelai getting dressed for the baptism: “Which one would go better with the baby?”

The scene between Rory and Lane was very realistic. I don't like it when shows manage to keep all of their main characters in one spot so that they can all remain friends. After High School things change: you see your old friends less, you need to catch up a lot when you see them every month or so. As sad as it is to see Lane and Rory drifting apart, it's very realistic. However, for the show's sake, they must find a way for them to communicate more. Rory needs friends. It seems like she hasn't talked to Paris or Lane all summer. And Logan was gone to Europe. What has she been doing with her time?

If I had to choose a side (just like Kirk at the Baptism), I would pick Lorelai's. I just don't like Rory's attitude lately. However, Lorelai's behaviour was immature this week. They're both being immature. Why don't they just say how they feel? Sookie didn't manage to bring them closer. I wonder who will, or how it will happen. I hope Christopher is involved. :)

Now there’s Logan's situation with his father. It's funny how he feels trapped in his parent's expectations of him (just like Lorelai did as a teenager). Rory on the other hand deliberately went to her grandparents, practically accepting that they'll be controlling her life (like that closet scene with the maid).

Will Logan's situation help Rory realize that she was lucky to grow up with a mother like Lorelai? Lorelai didn't push her into a career... she's simply asking that she remains in college.

A comment on the Forum was made regarding the town’s reaction to Rory and Lorelai’s fight. They should be noticing that Rory isn't speaking to Lorelai. We got a glimpse of it during the first (or second) episode, when Babette came in running to Luke. However, as small a town as is Stars Hollow, you would expect it to make the front page of the Gazette (after all, they did have mega coverage of the first traffic light installation!).

Talk about this episode...
