Driving Miss Gilmore
episode #6.21 | written by Elise

WB Summary: Temporarily unable to see after minor eye surgery, Emily (Kelly Bishop) enlists Lorelai's (Lauren Graham) help as her driver and companion, finally revealing a huge surprise that catches Lorelai completely off-guard. Meanwhile, Rory takes charge of Logan's recovery when he is released from the hospital. Finally, Luke (Scott Patterson) helps his sister Liz (Kathleen Whilhoite) and her husband T.J. (Michael DeLuise) deal with Liz's pregnancy. The episode was written by Amy Sherman-Palladino & Daniel Palladino and directed by Jamie Babbit.

Elise's Comment:

I am disappointed with this episode. It's the one setting-up the season finale, so I thought it would be better. It was just... blah. I see how they are setting things up for next week, but they could have made an effort to make the episode a little more eventful.

Things they are setting up:

1. Liz's pregnancy. The only reason they showed her this week is to set up something for next season. I'm almost sure of it. Otherwise, why would they do it? We already have enough unresolved things with Luke, April, the wedding, the house, Logan... So I expect to see a lot of TJ next season. The only other reason for them to include this would be to show Luke's willingness to bring those two together, and maybe draw a parallel with his relationship with Lorelai.

2. The Lorelai/Luke relationship not working out. I am not completely sure about this. The writers have kept us guessing all season. I don't think Lorelai and Luke will be together at the end of this season. However, I got a very good feeling about that house... I really feel a move is in the stars. So we'll see.

3. Logan is getting better, which only means one thing: he's on his way to England as soon as his father says "go". However, Rory's recent behaviour towards Mitchum might have an impact on Logan's final decision.

4. Christopher. Emily's comments made me believe that she wanted Lorelai to get back together with Christopher. However, she and Richard are buying a house for Lorelai and Luke. I don't understand if they want her with Luke or Christopher. Either way, I feel that those Christopher comments are foreshadowing something to come.

Worth mentioning:

1. Emily went from being "blind", to hiding her eyes because of the light, to seeing stuff around her... make up your mind lady. Her behaviour was not believable.

2. Jackson and Sookie's adventure with the pot was funny, but useless. However, I loved that last scene, when Lorelai comes to their house to talk. Very powerful. And "what's that smell?" was a perfect touch to it.

3. The only funny part was Michel exercising around the Inn to eliminate those billion calories he gained with the 2% milk. Did you see him jump like a frog at one point? lol. Well, the Rory Gilmore Observatory almost ties Michel’s milk as funniest moment. I actually thought the newspaper would be about that and not Mitchum’s interview.

4. We got some interesting interaction between Emily and Lorelai. I didn't expect her to react this way when she saw Lorelai crying about her relationship with Luke. I also didn't expect the house to be for Lorelai and Luke. What a beautiful house! Very Lorelai-ish. It actually looked a lot like her present house. Emily seemed very human at the end of the episode. I liked it when she told Lorelai that she wanted her have a land where she could have horses. That is very considerate of Emily. Oh, and now we know for sure she wouldn't be able to live in Stars Hollow -- "I would shoot myself and my neighbours".

5. Luke buys food for his apartment. This means he stays there a lot. I thought he and Lorelai lived together now. Wasn't that how things were at the beginning? Or was all that renovation for after the wedding? Luke is doing the same thing he did when he was married with Nicole and never stayed at "their place".

6. They really dropped the Stanford Gazette storyline. Even in the newspaper article, they mentioned Rory’s internship there and then her Yale position. Nothing about that job where Rory spent days stalking the editor. Why set up that storyline to drop it in the same season? Maybe something didn't work out with the story along the way, and they decided to make Rory editor of the Yale paper. I really don't understand this.

Final thoughts:

This wasn't a bad episode. There are no bad episodes of Gilmore Girls. However, I expected more out of the 21st episode of the season, especially since it was written by Amy and Daniel. It contained a lot of isolated events, but nothing was holding them all together.

Talk about this episode...
