The Deer-Hunters
episode #1.04 | written by Elise

WB Summary: Still struggling to catch up at Chilton, Rory receives the first "D" of her life on an English assignment and is so humiliated that she plunges into obsessive studying, with Lorelai's help, for her upcoming Shakespeare exam. When Rory's surreal encounter with a deer causes her to miss the exam, she has an uncharacteristic outburst, leading to a parent-teacher conference where Lorelai has her own outburst, but manages to begin a serious flirtation with Rory's handsome teacher, Max Medina.

Elise's Comment: This is the first episode of Gilmore Girls I saw. You can guess that I liked it, since GG has grown to become my favourite show. Now, everyone hates tests like Rory's. They require so much study and work. But Rory was doing great... until she woke-up late the day of the test! Her encounter with the deer is so hilarious, I can't believe she actually got out of the car to see if it was OK. Second hilarious scene: Rory "throwing a fit" in class. I'm so glad she told Paris and Tristan what she did. They deserved it. After all, her name isn't Mary! Gladly, things ended on a good note for Rory, and for Lorelai, who received a call from Max.

Rory: I’m going to a serious school now, I need serious paper.
Lorelai: Paper’s paper.
Rory: Not at Chilton.
Lorelai: Alright, fine. Here is your serious paper. [...] Ooh and here are you somber highlighters, your maudlin pencils, your manic-depressive pens. [...] Now these erasers are on lithium so they may seem cheerful but we actually caught them trying to shove themselves in the pencil sharpener earlier.

"I don't think Shakespeare knew himself that much."
-Rory, to Lane, while studying.

Rory: I just got hit by a deer!
Lane: You hit a deer?
Rory: No, I got hit by a deer!

Rory: Thanks though.
Lorelai: For what?
Rory: For yelling at the Headmaster the way you did.
Lorelai: Oh, I didn’t yell at him.
Rory: You called him ‘il duce’
Lorelai: Which means ‘kind sir’ in Cantonese.
